How did you get started in music?
When I was 15, I won a Christian music competition in New York City and got to fly to Nashville to compete in the finals. I didn’t win, but I knew I would be back in Nashville before long! A few years later I moved to Nashville to study music at Belmont University, and it’s been home ever since. My first job out of college was leading worship at a small church in Franklin, KY. I learned a lot about musicianship and leadership during those years, and my senior pastor was gracious enough to give me a flexible schedule so that I could start touring as an artist.
When did you know you wanted to be a musician?
When I was 8 years old, God spoke to me and told me that I would be a singer for him. I think he said “singer” because that’s all I could comprehend at that age — artist / songwriter / producer might have been a little much for 8-year-old me to understand. For a long time I doubted God’s promise and wondered if I made it all up, but the more I trust Him, the more He has proven Himself faithful.
What is life like as an indie artist?
It’s not easy, but it’s never boring! People say that the music industry isn’t what it once was — and that’s true — but I think there is more opportunity than ever for indie artists to get their music heard. For me it’s all about diversifying. In today’s music industry, it really helps if you have multiple skill sets, so I work hard at developing myself not just as an artist, but as a songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist as well.
Will you produce a song for me?
I would love to! Head on over to my studio page to learn more about what I offer and how we might work together.
Can you teach me how to produce?
I love hearing this question! And the answer is yes! If you’re an artist, songwriter, and/or aspiring producer, I really believe that education is the best thing you could invest in, because you will carry those skills with you forever. I offer one-on-one coaching in music production and songwriting. You can get in touch with me about that here.
Your song really touched me, can I share my story with you?
Please do! Hearing that my songs have made a difference is so exciting and encouraging. It’s the biggest reason I make music, so hearing your story would be wonderful.
What gear do you use?
Check out my studio page for more info on my music production gear. For my videos, I shoot with a pair of Canon 60Ds and edit on either Sony Vegas 10 or Adobe Premiere.
